Description
Axid Neo Capsules (40 mg) – Esomeprazole
Composition:
- Active Ingredient: Esomeprazole 40 mg per capsule
Indications:
- Used for the treatment of:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Erosive esophagitis caused by acid reflux
- Peptic ulcers (including those associated with H. pylori eradication)
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Mechanism of Action:
- Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by inhibiting the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme system in the gastric parietal cells. This reduces the production of gastric acid, leading to decreased acidity in the stomach and esophagus.
Dosage:
- The typical recommended dose is 40 mg once daily. Depending on the condition being treated, doses may be adjusted by a healthcare provider.
- For H. pylori eradication, it may be given in combination with antibiotics.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and flatulence.
- Serious Side Effects: Risk of Clostridium difficile infection in the colon, kidney problems, and low magnesium levels with prolonged use.
Contraindications:
- Not recommended for individuals with:
- Known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole or other PPIs.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
Storage:
- Store at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with liver disease and those taking other medications that may interact with esomeprazole.
- Long-term use should be monitored due to potential risks associated with low magnesium and vitamin B12 deficiencies.
Patient Counseling:
- Advise patients to take the medication as prescribed, typically before meals.
- Discuss the importance of adhering to the treatment regimen and reporting any persistent symptoms.
- Encourage patients to be aware of potential side effects and to seek medical advice if they experience severe gastrointestinal symptoms or signs of allergic reactions.
For personalized advice and specific recommendations, always consult with a healthcare professional or refer to the product packaging.
