    How it works

    Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride has been studied extensively in many species of animals and these studies are suggestive of action on the limbic system of the brain, which recent evidence indicates is involved in emotional responses. Clidinium belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics/antispasmodics. Chlordiazepoxide helps to reduce anxiety. It acts on the brain and nerves to produce a calming effect. It belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines.

    Side Effects

    Constipation , transient bradycardia ( followed by tachycardia , palpitation and arrhythmias ) , reduced bronchial secretions , urinary urgency and retention , dilatation of the pupils with loss of accommodation , photophobia , dry mouth , flushing and dryness of the skin. Side-effects that occur occasionally include confusion ( particularly in the elderly ) , nausea , vomiting and giddiness. Very rarely , angle-cloure glaucoma may occur .

    Drug Interactions

    Amantadine , atenolol , digoxin , phenothiazines , tricyclic antidepressants .

    Indication

    It is indicated to control emotional and somatic factors in gastrointestinal disorders. It may also be used as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of peptic ulcer and in the treatment of the irritable bowel syndrome (irritable colon, spastic colon, mucous colitis) and acute enterocolitis.

    When not to Use

    It is contraindicated in the presence of glaucoma (since the anticholinergic component may produce some degree of mydriasis) and in patients with prostatic hypertrophy and benign bladder neck obstruction. It is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride and/or clidinium bromide.

    PRECAUTIONS

    Precaution

    Concomitant use of benzodiazepines, including this medicine, and opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Because of these risks, reserve concomitant prescribing of these drugs – in patients for whom alternative treatment options are inadequate.

    WARNINGS

Reserve concomitant prescribing of these drugs in patients for whom alternative treatment options are inadequate. Limit dosages and durations to the minimum required. Follow patients for signs and symptoms of respiratory depression and sedation .

    Warning 2

    The use of benzodiazepines, including chlodiazepoxide hydrochloride, a component of Librax, exposes users to risks of abuse, misuse, and addiction, which can lead to overdose or death.

    Warning 3

    The continued use of benzodiazepines, including this medicine, may lead to clinically significant physical dependence. The risks of dependence and withdrawal increase with longer treatment duration and higher daily dose. Abrupt discontinuation or rapid dosage reduction after continued use may precipitate acute withdrawal reactions, which can be life-threatening.
