How it works
An antispasmodic which acts on the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal & urogenital pathways and relieves pain associated with spasm.
USAGE AND SAFETY

Phloroglucinol , Trimethylphloroglucinol
Side Effects
Constipation , transient bradycardia ( followed by tachycardia , palpitation and arrhythmias ) , reduced bronchial secretions , urinary urgency and retention , dilatation of the pupils with loss of accomodation , photophobia , dry mouth , flushing and dryness of the skin . Side-effects that occur occasionally include confusion ( particularly in the elderly) , nausea , vomiting and giddiness . Very rarely , angle-closure galucoma may occur .
Drug Interactions
Amantadine , atenolol , digoxin , phenothiazines , tricyclic antidepressants .
Indication
It is used in : Spasm associated with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) , Spasm associated with diarrhoea and dysentery , Renal colic , Biliary colic , Dysmenorrhoea , Delayed labour .
When not to Use
Hypersensitive to any of the ingredients in the list.
PRECAUTIONS
Precaution
Association of phloroglucinol with major pain killers such as morphine or its derivatives must be avoided because of their spasmogenic effect.
WARNINGS
Warning 1
Antimuscarinics should be used with caution in Down’s syndrome , in children and in the elderly.
Warning 2
They should also be used with caution in gastro-esophageal reflux disease , diarrhoea , ulcerative colitis .
Warning 3
They should be used with caution in acute myocardial infarction , hypertension , conditions characterised by tachycardia ( including hyperthyroidism , cardiac insufficiency, cardiac surgery) .
